The notion of coaching has taken shape in recent years. While many people are clear about what coaching means, others do not know what coaching is, and for others, even if they know what it is, it’s not clear how it can help them. The Vivacious team will help you find out how a coach can help you evolve.
From the beginning, it is worth mentioning that there are different coaching schools, and each school has its own definition of coaching, its own working tools and its own expectations.
When do you need coaching or when a coach can help you?
Sometimes I was very skeptical about this notion and the benefits of a coaching service. I did not see its usefulness, it seemed to take too long, not to act precisely or to be a waste of time. Life teaches you a lot and I have to admit, not only that I changed my mind, but I almost came to say the opposite.
Call a coach when you do not know exactly what you want
You may not find yourself in this phase, but there are plenty of people who have been in this paradigm for years. Here a coach becomes valuable because he can help you find out exactly what you want. It can help you find out what you really want, what is important to you, what effects you want to generate in your life, at what stage of your life you are. At this stage, you gain clarity about what you want and what you really need.
When you are confused, exactly at this stage you are. Usually 2-3 sessions take place to gain this clarification, but on the other hand, it is a step you can take once a year to recalibrate goals, establish them, etc. Find out more here.
Ask for coaching when you know what you want, but you are not sure of the way you have to follow
In order to get to this stage of coaching, you do not necessarily need to go through the first one. You can know exactly what you want but be confused about the paths you have to choose. Beware, it’s not necessarily the case that you do not know why to follow a path, but rather how to follow, be it business coaching or life coaching.
At this stage, a coach will help you clarify your options, generate new options, and choose the one best suited to you. The way you choose, not the coach. It seems simple, but you may have experienced this situation and you have remained stuck in “indecision” days, weeks, months, sometimes even years.
You know the path you want to follow, and a coach supports you to make a plan!
Once you know your destination and you are clear about the way, it’s time to move on. A good coach helps you define your plan, define your action steps, estimate the risks, estimate the implementation times or possible obstacles. It is important that in this plan you are aware of the role you have to assume, of your responsibilities and of the internal and external resources that you have or that you can access.
You know what to do, but you just do not do it
Probably this stage is one of the most complicated stages you can be at. There is a big difference between knowing what to do and doing what you know. How many times do you know what you have to do, but for some reason you do not do so? There are one day deferrals, delays for months or years. The more delicate the situation, the more likely it becomes a delay, and even if you know clearly what to do, you do not act accordingly.
At this point the coach has a difficult task, but yours as a customer is even more difficult. Through exploration, at this stage, weigh, evaluate, explore and realize things that will move you in the direction you want. Sometimes you lack a strategy, sometimes you have a fear of failure, sometimes you are afraid. Each case is different.
This stage is where you go to coaching as a fitness room, that is maintenance. This means that you have overtaken the 4 steps above and you know what you want to do, you know how, you have a plan and you have gone to action. Now you just optimize, find better ways, redefine goals, monitor progress, structure your activities. Although it would seem unbelievable, even at top management level, coaching is practiced at this stage. At this stage, it also goes to anticipation, to preventing problems, to lessons learned from mistakes very quickly. Problems in the “façade” as they say, on the one hand, and on the other hand, optimize what already exists.
